What Does Growth Look Like for a Massage Therapist at ROVARA?

3 min read

If ROVARA doesn't want therapists increasing their earning potential simply by putting more bodies on their tables, how can their careers and compensation grow?

It's a fair question.

Our answer is through development.

The starting rate for ROVARA's founding Massage Therapist role is $28 per hour, but we don't intend for a therapist's starting position or compensation to represent the ceiling of their career here.

As practitioners deepen their skill, expertise, judgment, and leadership capabilities, we want opportunities for greater responsibility and compensation to develop alongside them.

Our clinical model includes a pathway toward advanced roles, and as ROVARA grows, we expect opportunities for mentorship, training, and leadership to grow with it.

Growth at ROVARA should come through developing your practice, not simply putting more bodies on your table.

Becoming a practitioner doesn't end at licensure

Licensure establishes the ability to practice. It doesn't represent the end of your development as a practitioner.

Massage therapy requires technical skill, certainly. But excellent practice also requires judgment, observation, communication, adaptability, curiosity, and an increasingly sophisticated understanding of the person on the table.

Those things develop over time.

We want ROVARA to be an environment where that development is both expected and supported.

Growth requires investment

ROVARA provides paid continuing education support—not simply to maintain licensure, but to help therapists deepen their skills and expand their areas of expertise.

Learning will also happen inside ROVARA. Our therapists will have regular opportunities to learn from one another, compare clinical observations, ask questions, and surface patterns they're noticing in their work through collaborative roundtables. We'll also bring in local professionals, including mental health specialists and others whose work meaningfully intersects with ours, for workshops and seminars that broaden how we think about the people we care for.

Massage therapists aren't mental health practitioners, nor should they attempt to become them. But working through the lens of the nervous system asks us to understand boundaries, communication, regulation, and how emotional and mental stress impact the physical body.

The goal isn't to move beyond our scope. It's to become better within it.

Protecting capacity doesn't mean expecting less

We've written before about why ROVARA therapists are limited to four 90-minute sessions per day.

We believe excellent work requires capacity. But protecting that capacity doesn't mean lowering expectations.

In many ways, it allows us to expect something different.

We want our therapists to stay curious. To deepen their skills. To ask questions. To sharpen their judgment. To continue learning rather than settling into the comfortable repetition of what they already know.

Our goal is not for a therapist to be the same practitioner three years after joining ROVARA that they were on their first day.

ROVARA should be a place where practitioners get better at their craft.

Excellence is something we build together

ROVARA cannot become excellent independently of the people who comprise it.

That creates responsibility on both sides.

We have a responsibility to provide the resources, feedback, opportunities, and environment that support continued development.

Our practitioners have a responsibility to remain curious, engaged, open to feedback, and committed to improving their craft.

And as they develop, their experience and insight should make ROVARA better, too.

We don't want to build a company that simply employs excellent practitioners.

We want to build a company that helps form them.
